Learn to pray as the Prophet ﷺ prayed

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Pray as you have seen me praying.” Here you can see every movement of the prayer and hear what is said in it, with its meaning — from wudu and the opening takbir to the salam and the words after prayer. Then test yourself, and pray it step by step on your own.

The prayer shown here follows the Sunnah as it is taught in Saudi Arabia (for example Sheikh Ibn Baz’s “How the Prophet ﷺ prayed”), with the source of every supplication. Where scholars differ on a small detail we say so on the “For teens” page — ask your parents or teacher which view your family follows.

Lesson 1

The five daily prayers

Prayer is the second pillar of Islam, after the two testimonies — a meeting between you and Allah five times a day. It is the first thing a person will be asked about on the Day of Judgement (al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud). It was made obligatory on the night of the Isra’ and Mi‘raj.

Tap each prayer to see its time and how many rak‘ahs it has:

All in one table

That is 17 obligatory rak‘ahs a day. A “rak‘ah” is one round: standing and reciting, then a bow, then two prostrations.

The regular sunnah prayers add twelve rak‘ahs: two before Fajr, four before Dhuhr and two after it, two after Maghrib and two after ‘Isha. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever prays twelve rak‘ahs in a day and night, a house is built for him in Paradise” (Muslim).

In the “aloud” rak‘ahs the imam recites so others can hear; in the “quiet” ones he recites to himself. And the Prophet ﷺ said: “Teach your children to pray when they are seven” (Abu Dawud).

Lesson 2

Before you pray: wudu and the conditions

No prayer is accepted without purity. Wudu takes two minutes and carries a great reward: sins leave with the last drop of water (Muslim). Tap through the steps in order:

What breaks wudu

The nine conditions of prayer

A girl covers her whole body in prayer except the face (and the hands, according to many scholars) — that is why she wears a prayer garment. We pray on a clean place, such as a prayer mat, facing the qibla toward the Ka‘bah.

Lesson 3

The right postures

Tap each posture to see the movement. The little Ka‘bah shows the qibla, and the side facing you is the worshipper’s right side.

Fix the mistake

Each picture shows a mistake many people make. Tap it to see it done right.

Lesson 4

What do we say at each step?

Every phrase here comes from the Prophet ﷺ, with its meaning and its source. Press “Listen” to hear it, and repeat it until you know it by heart.

Lesson 5

The prayer, step by step

Choose a prayer, then step through it — or press “Pray along” to hear every phrase and see every movement in turn.

Lesson 6

The words after the prayer

After the salam, don’t jump up: the Prophet ﷺ asked forgiveness three times and then remembered Allah. Whoever says “Subḥāna llāh” 33 times, “Al-ḥamdu li llāh” 33 times and “Allāhu akbar” 33 times, and completes the hundred with the tahlil, his sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea (Muslim).

Count with the tasbih

Pillars, obligations and sunnahs

Not every part of the prayer has the same weight. Knowing the difference tells you what to do if you forget something. (These lists are the ones taught in Saudi schools, from the classic “Conditions, pillars and obligations of prayer”.)

The prostration of forgetfulness

Two prostrations, just like those of the prayer, that make up for forgetting. When?

Common mistakes

        • Rushing without stillness. The Prophet ﷺ saw a man praying hastily and told him three times: “Go back and pray, for you have not prayed” (al-Bukhari and Muslim). Stillness is a pillar: settle in every position until each bone is back in place.
        • Racing the imam. Don’t bow or prostrate before he does; follow once he has reached the position (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
        • Reciting only in your head. Al-Fatiha is recited by moving the tongue and lips, even if no one else can hear you.
        • Looking up, turning around, fiddling with clothes or a phone. Turning around is “something Satan snatches from a person’s prayer” (al-Bukhari).
        • Forearms on the floor, or feet or nose lifted, in sujud.
        • Delaying the prayer until its time runs out — the most serious of all.

Where scholars differ

        • Going down to sujud: we show the knees first, then the hands (the majority view, chosen by Ibn Baz and Ibn ‘Uthaymin); some scholars put the hands first. There is room for both.
        • Hands after rising from ruku‘: we show them on the chest (the view of Ibn Baz and Ibn ‘Uthaymin); some scholars let them hang.
        • The resting sit: a brief sit before standing for the second and fourth rak‘ahs — some recommend it always, others only when needed.
        • Girls’ prayer: the same postures and words as boys’. A girl covers her whole body except her face, lowers her voice when men outside the family could hear, and in congregation women pray behind the men.
